XJ6 TRUNK Restoration
When I bought my 71 XJ6 in April 2002 the trunk smelled awful and the floor coverings with 31 years years of use and abuse were oily and sticky.
When I worked on a leaking fuel select switch I removed the flooring etc and soon had another project on my hands.
So out everything went including the wood panels over the spare tire and fuel select valve area. Everything was weathered and cracked.
I made up all new flooring with fitted and painted wood pieces and the entire lower area was cleaned and painted.
Rather than trying to cover the side area and rear wall with material on its own, I made up 3/16" wood panels and covered them with the new material.
This makes it smooth yet allows access if need be by removing the panels rather than peeling up glued down carpet.
I used marine carpeting which has a rubber backing and makes gluing easy and solid.
Everywhere now has the new carpeting even the back wall near the opening.
I chose gray rather than black as I think it looks nicer and easier to see when dark.
I also added an additional trunk light to the ceiling. Overall results makes it feel new again.
